Project:
International
Centre for Life
The International
Centre for Life is a 54 million pound Millennium development
in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne. One of the most interesting
problems facing the architects, Terry Farrell & Partners,
during the design of the development was the cladding of the
fire escape stair whilst maintaining the futuristic design
of the project. This problem was resolved by the use of a
stainless steel metallic fabric specially manufactured by
Potter & Soar.
With
a closely woven aperture, produced with contrasting surface
textures on the front & back of the material, this Coniston
319 pattern provides wind & weather resistant qualities.
It also achieves the permanent ventilation required for
the safety of fire fighters and is completely fire proof.
In this
illustration the appearance of this striking structure is
complemented by reflections of the warm glow of autumn sunshine
on the many surface facets of the stainless steel mesh.
